Black Friday I survived, Chrysler almost didn’t

Thursday morning, my sister-in-law T, her cousin L and I left Scarborough for the 4.5 hour drive to Grove City, P.A.  There was no border problems, lots of laugh and even a short nap on the drive up which I never get to do since I am usually the driver.  However as T has a brand new (3 month old) Grand Caravan, she drove so we would have lots of space.

Enjoy your one day of non-violent holiday sale shopping.

We got to the hotel with no problems and immediately I took a nap again (I know I need lots of sleep for a night full of walking and shopping).  We drove to the Subway gas station – love it – and parked our car at the outlet so we had a prime parking spot.  Our walk back to the hotel was a cold one, but we made it laughing all the way.

Some of the outlet stores opened at 9:00 pm this year so we hopped on the shuttle at 9 knowing we would have ample time to get there and start our shopping.

We had an amazing time!  We shopped in and out of what felt like a million stores, spent hundreds of dollars and got amazing bargains on Christmas gifts our friends and family will love!

We hopped into bed around 3:30 am and slept till just past 11:00 am.  We admired our shopping parcels from the night before and headed over to the Eat and Park for breakfast!  For $8.00 we were stuffed and ready to shop again.  We picked up some more personal items and got back to the hotel around 5:00pm.  Dinner at the Eat and Park was just as delicious as breakfast and then we came back to the hotel, watched a movie and crashed into bed around 10:00.

Sorry you had a stressful day of shopping.

This is where it got interesting.  We woke up Saturday morning with the expectation of checking out of the hotel, driving to Robinson County P.A and spending the remainder of our money before making the long trek home to Toronto.  However L noticed first thing that our room had NO hot water – not a good sign for 3 ladies who desperately wanted to shower.

We decided to carry on, checked out and packed the car full.  We got in the car, T turned the key to start it and NOTHING!  The car wouldn’t start.  T called Roadside assistance and they swore it was the battery – we knew differently since the radio, lights and electronic functions all worked – but the lady on the phone SWORE it was a battery issue.  They sent the biggest red neck with a tow truck to come help us and he confirmed it was NOT the battery.  However as he was not a mechanic he had no idea what was wrong.

We got on the phone with roadside assistance again, to no avail, so we called Chrysler Canada directly and was on the phone with them for about 1-2 hours trying to get a tow with a flat-bed to a dealership that was OPEN!  They said no dealerships were open in the States for the holiday.

My sister paid a Tow Truck to tow us to Buffalo since that was close enough to a border to get a ride home from a friend and the guy who came to pick us up (also red neck) but cute as hell got us all to Buffalo, shaken, but not stirred.  When we arrived in Niagara Falls, NY Chrysler they WERE open and stuck the computer to the “brain” of the car, hit a button and BAM! the car started no problems.  The guys were sweet as pie and some of them were super cute so I guess seeing three stranded Canadian women brought out the gentlemen in them and they stuck around a bit later (since they were closing as we arrived) then usual.

We drove through the border with no problems, and got our way home.  Now besides two issues with traffic coming home, it was great to be on Canadian pavement and even better when I stepped foot in my door.  It had been a long day and the Americans were so helpful (unlike the assholes on the phone from Chrysler and Roadside assistance both Canadian).

I love Black Friday shopping and while this was not my favourite trip, it was a great time and I had fun with both T and L and can’t wait till next year!

So I received a few comments…

…by blog, Facebook, text and phone calls and I am keeping my blog the way it is.  I love me and I love the majority of you who actually take the time to read it so why would I change it and risk losing you for a few people who in the grand scheme of things have NO control or say over my life!  So feel free to hate, love or loathe me!  But you are getting me – all of me!  Take it or leave it!

And I really do take a pill for that – a chill pill or crazy pill as I like to call it…so here I go!

This weekend I have new furniture being delivered courtesy of the Brick (and my super generous father).  My gf NYC girl is moving into her own apt and had no furniture – well I was planning on buying new furniture anyway for when I move into the bsmt so I decided to give her all of my bedroom furniture.  I paid for the bed, dresser, end tables, mirror, lounge, mattress and box spring – and then the Brick called the other day to say it wouldn’t be delivered because they had no stock left.  HAHAHAHA is it April Fools Day and no one told me??

Needless to say I tore the ear off the poor CSR on the phone because I PAID for this furniture, was assured it was in stock and would be delivered June 2nd.  I kindly advised her if it wasn’t delivered on JUNE 2ND then I would go to the Brick, sleep there until it was.  We argued back and forth and finally she assured me at least the bed and mattress/box spring would be delivered.  SIGH.  Now of course when I call them today to confirm – I expect them to say “nope not in stock” and I will have to rip into another poor underpaid CSR, but seriously…if you pay for something shouldn’t they hold it for you and not sell it to the next person who walks in??  I hate the Brick – this has been the worst experience ever for me (I’ve always had amazing service from them before and from everywhere else I have ever bought something).

However the whole point of this story – was that I had a dream last night.  My two nieces and I went to the Brick for our sleepover and Newbie and his sister-in-law was there.  The five of us spent the night like Goldilocks, trying out different mattresses, couches, pillows and tv’s.  It was a blast.  I was having so much fun with the four of them I was sad when my alarm woke me up.  I was jumping on a mattress that was “to hard” and throwing pillows at Newbie who was playing Marco Polo with R, my oldest niece.  Yes I think a sleepover at the Brick is just what the Dr. ordered!!  Here I come!!

P.S Do you think the pizza delivery company will deliver there for us???

Spring has Sprung – let’s vote!

Oh, I love working for the City of Toronto – a city I love!  However every three or four years, its stressful and causes me to feel anxiety.  It’s that time of year when contracts are renegotiated and my CUPE members fight for a fair(ish) contract.  The city won’t budge, the union won’t budge so we, the members are voting – today.  If after the vote the contract is signed – a lot of us get screwed, but some crazy changes.  If it’s not signed, we all could possibly be on strike, be locked out or be forced to work under different provisions.  I don’t like it – not one bit.  I figure no matter what happens today, we lose.  It’s one of the unfortunate facts of life working for a large municipality.  However, working for Social Services, I also get to help, encourage and support Torontonians on a daily basis and I love that part!

Since it is beginning to feel a bit like Spring again (what were those single digit temperatures about??) I am thinking ahead – I need to do some major spring cleaning because by the beginning of summer I should have my new basement apartment and I want to make sure that only the essentials and the things I love go down there with me!  I will clean out the closet – both clothes and shoes and coats – coats!!!!  AHHHHH  Now lets face it, if we don’t go on said strike above, I will continue shopping and buy more stuff so really cleaning out closets is important so I can see what I need/want to fill up a pretty summer wardrobe!  I know I want some pretty summer dresses, I just am not sure where to go for them. I am not as small as I had hoped to be so I still need a store that carries a variety of clothes in a larger size – Ricki’s is great, but they don’t have a lot of casual clothes – most of my office clothes come from there.  I will figure it out – I am a shopper after all!

Speaking of being a smaller size – one of my goals of 2012 was to lose another 25 pounds.  I still believe I can do this except now it’s more like 26.4 pounds because I have gained 1.4 pounds since January!  Are you kidding me!  grrr…it’s been a rough year emotionally so far, but I am hoping to kick my ass back on track now that the nicer weather is here and get out and start moving more often.  I also need to get back to eating my salads and fruits cause they have disappeared out of my diet for carbs – bagels and subs, and sugar – pop and fudge!    Watching Biggest Loser last night made me remember that excuses can only carry you so far.  Newbie needs to start eating better too and since baseball season will begin soon at least he’ll get some exercise, but me – I can’t play again this year due to health issues, so I have to figure something else out.

Tonight I go to my Nana’s house to clean it out a bit.  To take some things I want, my memories, those things that are meaningful to me.  My pups chair.  The chair I sat in every time I was at my nan’s while she would cook me dinner.  The books I read while snuggled up in that chair…Crazy Cat Ladies dad is going to cover it for me in black so it matches my bsmt apartment colours (right now it’s burnt orange…LOL…).  I can’t wait to read more great books snuggled up in it – reminiscing about my Nan.

Before this turns mushy and I start to cry – it’s been an emotional week, I am going to end by wishing you all a Happy Hump Day, please keep me in your thoughts as my fate at work is determined by 23,000 people all voting based on their own interests!

Has it really been two weeks!

Two weeks ago today K, T and me went BLACK FRIDAY SHOPPING in Grove City PA.  Driving 4+ hours with two of my favourite ladies and then shopping from 10 pm to 5:30 am is AWESOME.

I learned my  sister-in-law can keep up with us shopoholics *yes K I mean you too*.  We shopped till we dropped literally, then we woke up and started shopping all over again.  Three full days of driving and shopping and my sis was still in great spirits wants to do it all over again next year!  She found great deals – as we all did – and the only down side was, I couldn’t shop for her because she was with me!!!

I also learned that buying an inflatable mattress that has a foot pump can be a good investment.  When I originally booked the hotel it was just me and sis going.  K agreed to come after I booked so I didn’t have  a bed for her.  I decided instead of changing hotels to a bigger room (ours was 5 minutes from the outlet) that I would get a mattress and she could sleep on that.  The foot pump – once we figured out how it worked – was actually really easy and pretty comfortable all things considering.  Sis ended up sleeping on the mattress but she was fine with it.

Food – American food – is evil.  Evil in the best way possible.  We ate at the Eat n Park everyday for breakfast.  The sausage, caramel apple strudel pancakes, hot chocolate, coffee etc was all yummy!  K and sis loved breakfast too.  And boy it was cheap!  Nothing better than cheap, yummy breakfast!  For dinner we had Subway subs at the Kwik Fill gas station Thursday night – everywhere is closed on Thanksgiving!!!!  But even still, it was edible and satisfying!  But Friday night, I gave the girls a treat.  I took them into Pittsburgh PA for more shopping and dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings.  We had everything that is NOT weight watchers acceptable!  LOL…and loved every minute of it!  We actually had left overs there was so much food!

***and just so you know I still lost 2.1 pds that week!***

Driving home was hard, I am not going to lie.  The ex used to drive these long trips and this was my first one.  Coming home I was so exhausted I could feel my eyes closing – thank GOD traffic was not busy.  I woke up completely when we got to the border and was grateful that we only had a little bit to pay in taxes.  When we got home and I was able to drop K and T home, I came back to my home, in my bed, looked at all the bags, turned the lights off and went to bed.  Bags of presents and shoes and clothes for me is not something I wanted any part of that night!

I hope you all get to enjoy Black Friday at some point in your life, it is something you won’t want to miss!  See you next year Grove!
